2026 Interior Design Trends: Inspiration Without the Pressure

Every year, the design world rolls out a new set of “must-have” looks — and while I’ve never believed in reinventing your entire home just because the calendar changes, I do think there’s real value in pausing to see what’s emerging.

Trends can be inspiring. They can spark ideas, help you articulate what you’re craving in your home, or give you confidence to try something you’ve always loved but weren’t quite brave enough to commit to. More importantly, they tend to reflect what’s happening culturally — how we live, what we value, and how we want to feel when we wake up in the morning and come home at night.

I don’t follow trends religiously, but I do get genuinely excited when I see my wonderful trade suppliers release new collections — especially in the world of soft furnishings. Fabrics, trims, textures… that’s where the magic happens for me.

As we move into 2026, the mood is clear. We’re embracing the natural, the organic and the unapologetically fabulous. Homes that feel lived-in, layered and loved are defining the year ahead. Think gentle clutter, imperfect beauty, rich materials, and interiors that look as though they’ve been collected over time rather than pulled from a catalogue.

Many of the themes we saw in 2025 — colour drenching, checkerboard floors, warmer wood tones and jewel colours — continue into 2026, but with even more emphasis on warmth, longevity and well-being. Neutrals will always be in our back pocket, but deeper hues like cranberry, burgundy, sapphire and emerald are feeling increasingly luxurious and timeless, especially when layered with stone, wood and brass.

So, here’s a closer look at what’s poised to shape interiors in 2026 — not as rules to follow, but as inspiration to draw from.

The Top 12 Interior Design Trends for 2026

1. Smart Design for Aging in Place & Multigenerational Living

More homeowners are planning ahead, designing homes that can adapt over time. This includes thoughtful layouts, wider walkways, accessible bathrooms, and flexible spaces that work for different generations — all without sacrificing style.

2. Traditional Details (With a Softer Edge)

Traditional design is back, but it’s warmer and more relaxed than before. Inspired by English country homes and modern Tudor style, think inset cabinetry, plate racks, arched range hoods, stained woods and beautiful craftsmanship that feels familiar and comforting rather than formal.

3. Warm & Medium Wood Tones

We’re officially moving away from stark, impersonal interiors. Warm and medium wood tones — walnut, elm, hickory and cherry — are replacing light oak and all-white finishes. Darker stains are also making a comeback, bringing depth and timeless elegance to kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces.

4. Warm, Earthy Colours Everywhere

Brown is back (and I’m here for it). Alongside terra cotta, sage, olive, dusty blue, muted pastels, creamy beiges, taupes and buttery yellows, these grounded tones create spaces that feel calm, comforting and lived-in. The era of icy greys and clinical whites is well and truly over.

5. Green as the New Neutral

Green has always been a favourite of mine — my Style + Soul logo even started out green. In 2026, green steps confidently into neutral territory, anchoring entire rooms rather than acting as an accent. Sage, olive, forest and deep greens are everywhere — in cabinetry, tile, stone and especially upholstery.

6. Warm Yellow Accents

Earthy yellows like ochre, mustard and honey are adding cheer and warmth without feeling overpowering. These muted shades work beautifully in textiles and upholstery, creating a cosy, sun-washed glow — especially when paired with rust, burgundy and deep browns.

7. Integrated, Seamless & Hidden Features

As homes become more multifunctional, design is getting smarter and more discreet. Concealed appliances, hidden storage, pocket doors and panel-ready cabinetry allow technology to fade into the background, letting materials and craftsmanship shine.

8. Flat-Panel Cabinets & Vanities

Flat-panel (or slab-front) cabinetry is gaining popularity across both modern and traditional homes. Clean lines, subtle edge profiles and warm finishes give a custom look that feels refined but not cold — and they’re wonderfully practical and easy to maintain.

9. Natural Stone Slabs With Quiet Drama

Natural stone continues to shine, but in a softer, more organic way. Quartzite and marble slabs with sweeping veining in greens, browns, reds and golds add movement and artistry without overwhelming a space. Paired with timber and classic metals, they feel luxurious yet approachable.

10. Decorative Flooring & Checkerboard Patterns

A trend we saw in 2025 that’s going nowhere. Checkerboard tiles, herringbone and chevron patterns are adding personality underfoot. From classic black and white to sage and cream or jewel-toned combinations, decorative flooring brings playful elegance to kitchens, bathrooms and beyond.

11. Smart Homes & Wellness Features

Smart home integration continues to grow, from simple thermostat upgrades to advanced lighting, appliances and automated window treatments. Wellness-focused design — better lighting, air quality, privacy and comfort — is becoming just as important as aesthetics.

12. Pattern on Pattern

Pattern-on-pattern is back, and done well, it’s absolutely gorgeous. Layered stripes, florals, checks and textures create spaces that feel collected, cosy and full of personality. When thoughtfully combined, bold patterns still feel easy to live with — especially in soft furnishings.

Bringing It All Back to You (and Style + Soul)

At Style + Soul, I’ve always believed your home should be you. It should tell your story — not look like it’s been lifted straight from a magazine or showroom. Yes, we’re all inspired by outside influences (and that’s a beautiful thing), but your home should reflect who you are, what you love, and how you live.

STYLE + SOUL is a haven where home styling comes to life through personal flair and nostalgia. I’m Maree, your Soft Furnishings Specialist, with a lifelong love of interiors sparked by growing up around my mother’s workshop and strengthened by over 28 years in the interiors and textile industry.

Whether it’s a small update or a larger project, we’d love to work with you. Even the smallest changes — new cushions, updated window treatments, reupholstered furniture — can have a huge impact.

Together, we can transform your home while balancing budget and desires, whether you live in a modest unit or a grand estate. Because the best homes aren’t trend-led — they’re lived in, loved, and deeply personal.
